The figure of Odradek

I’m starting this blog by revisiting a short story by Kafka “The Cares of a Family Man” I read for the first time a few months ago.

The broad theme of this project is an exploration of the idea and use of the model in fine art practice. I’m particularly interested in the idea of the model as an open system, generative and operating between media, rather than a scale model functioning as an illustration.

The figure of Odradek is somehow both haunting and ambiguous. We are unclear as to whether s/he is a creature or an object, complete or a fragment. Nomadic, moving in the background and hard to get hold of.   I have therefore chosen Odradek as the title for this blog and a kind of mascot for the project.

S/he will be following along in the background, trailing a line of thread.
